Jet Ski Before Your Cruise from PortMiami

Jet Ski Before Your Cruise from PortMiami

Cruise ships give you a strange gift: a few free hours in Miami on the day you board, or on the day you get off, with nothing booked. Biscayne Bay is 20–25 minutes from PortMiami, and a self-guided jet ski ride is one of the few things you can do in that window that actually feels like you were in Miami. This page explains how to time it safely.

Quick answer: can you jet ski before a cruise from PortMiami?

Direct answer: yes, if your ship boards in the afternoon. Jet Ski Miami 7 is in the Miami Beach / North Bay Village area, about 20–25 minutes from PortMiami by rideshare, open daily 7 AM – 6 PM. A 1-hour ride ($189 per jet ski, up to 2 people) booked for 9 or 10 AM, with the 30-minute check-in before it, has you back at the port by early afternoon. A 2-hour ride (2.5 hours on the water with the bonus 30 minutes) works if boarding is late afternoon or if you ride the day before. Book at /book.

Timing rules, as general advice

Direct answer: work backwards from your ship's all-aboard time and plan to be at the terminal 2–3 hours before it. Cruise lines publish their own boarding windows and we are not a substitute for your line's instructions; the 2–3 hour figure is a conservative buffer that covers traffic, check-in lines at the terminal and the unexpected.

Then subtract the pieces:

  • 20–25 minutes from the jet ski location to PortMiami in normal traffic. Add 15 minutes on weekend afternoons or if there is an event Downtown.
  • Your ride time (1 hour or 2.5 hours on the water).
  • 30 minutes before the ride for check-in, ID, the safety briefing and the route overview. Arrive 30 minutes early; this is required, not optional.
  • 15–20 minutes after the ride to rinse off, change and settle the balance.

These are examples, not a schedule we guarantee; your own ship's instructions always win. If your boarding window is in the morning, ride the day before instead, or on the way home.

Jet ski after the cruise (disembarkation day)

Direct answer: the day you get off the ship is the lower-stress option. Most ships disembark in the morning, which leaves a long gap before an afternoon or evening flight from Miami International Airport (25–35 minutes from us). A 10 AM or 11 AM slot, 1 hour or 2 hours, then rideshare to the airport, fills that gap without the pressure of a ship to catch. Water is usually calmest in the morning, which also makes it the best time to ride.

Luggage

We do not store luggage. If you will have suitcases with you between a hotel checkout and boarding, or between disembarking and a flight, ask at booking before you plan around it and we will tell you honestly what is realistic. Do not show up with bags assuming there is a place for them. Most cruise passengers solve this by riding before hotel checkout (ride at 8 or 9 AM, check out at 11) or by using their hotel's bag storage.

The boater card, done on your phone

Direct answer: anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who drives the jet ski needs a Florida boater safety card. The temporary certificate is done online in about 30 minutes, costs about $14, and the link is sent after booking. You can complete it on your phone the evening before, from the hotel or from the ship, and show the confirmation at check-in. Passengers do not need one. The other requirements: the person who books and signs must be 21+ with a government photo ID, drivers must be 14+, riders under 18 need a parent or guardian signature, no alcohol before riding, and life vests (provided) are mandatory. More on the license page.

The agreement and waiver are also signed electronically from a private link after booking, so the only paperwork on the day is the ID check.

Which ride fits a cruise window?

  • 1 Hour, $189 per jet ski: the Venetian Islands (10–15 minutes from the start) and Star Island (15–20 minutes), with the Downtown skyline behind them. The right choice for embarkation day.
  • 2 Hours, $349 per jet ski (+30 minutes bonus, 2.5 hours on the water): adds the Haulover sandbar, a 25–30 minute ride north, with a swim stop on the shallows. Best for the day before, or for disembarkation day. The route is on the Haulover sandbar page.
  • A second person on the same ski is +$30. Fuel, life vests, GPS and the briefing are included; the ride is self-guided inside a GPS-monitored zone, and the jet skis slow automatically in no-wake zones, so you cannot accidentally earn a speeding ticket before your vacation starts. All prices are on the price page.

Payment and cancellation for cruise travelers

A $30 booking deposit holds a slot for 1–3 jet skis (20% of the total for 4 or more). The balance is paid at check-in by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, plus a $150 refundable security hold per jet ski, released about 5 business days after return (so after your cruise, not before it). The booking deposit is non-refundable; cancel at least 48 hours ahead and the ride moves once to another date within 90 days. If we cancel for weather or safety, you get a full refund of unused time including the deposit, or a free reschedule. For cruise passengers that last point matters: a cancelled ride on embarkation day costs you nothing but the morning.

What to bring from the ship or hotel

  • Swimwear under your clothes; a towel and a dry top for the ride to the port.
  • Government photo ID for the person who booked, and the boater card confirmation on your phone.
  • A card for the balance and the security hold.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap. Reef-safe sunscreen if you are heading to the Caribbean next.
  • A waterproof phone pouch for photos.
  • Your cruise documents, kept in the car or in a dry bag, not on the jet ski.

Getting here from PortMiami and the cruise hotels

The jet ski location is about 20–25 minutes from PortMiami, Downtown and Brickell, where most pre-cruise hotels are, and about 15 minutes from South Beach. Pickup and drop-off are at Bill Bird Marina in Haulover Park (10800 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33154); parking instructions are sent right after booking. Rideshare is the simplest option; if you have a rental car to return, ask at booking about parking and plan the return around the ride.

If you have a full day in Miami before or after the ship, the one-day plan and the things to do in Miami hub lay out the rest. Jet Ski Miami 7 has a 5.0 rating on Google from 46 reviews (October 2026) and answers on WhatsApp at +1 (786) 863-1721 in English and Russian; more cruise-day notes are on the blog.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the jet ski rental from PortMiami?

Can I jet ski on embarkation day?

Yes, if your ship boards in the afternoon. A 1-hour ride at 9 or 10 AM, with the 30-minute check-in before it, leaves you back at the port by early afternoon with a buffer.

When should I be back at the port?

General advice: plan to be at the terminal 2–3 hours before your ship's all-aboard time. Work backwards from that to pick your ride slot.

Can I bring my luggage to the jet ski location?

We do not store luggage. If you will have bags with you between a hotel checkout and boarding, ask at booking before you arrive and we will tell you what is realistic.

Do I need a boater license for a one-time ride?

Drivers born on or after January 1, 1988 need a Florida boater safety card. The temporary certificate is done online in about 30 minutes for about $14 and can be shown on your phone.

What if the weather cancels my ride on cruise day?

If we cancel for weather or safety, you get a full refund of unused time including the deposit, or a free reschedule. If you need to cancel yourself, do it at least 48 hours ahead and the ride moves once within 90 days.

Is a jet ski better before or after the cruise?

After is lower-stress: no ship to catch, and a morning ride on disembarkation day fits before an afternoon flight. Before works well when boarding is in the afternoon and you arrive in Miami the day before.
