Haulover Sandbar by Jet Ski: The Self-Guided Ride Guide
Short answer: the Haulover sandbar is a shallow, white-sand bank just inside Haulover Inlet at the north end of Biscayne Bay, and it is the most popular stop on a Miami jet ski ride. From the Jet Ski Miami 7 base in the Miami Beach / North Bay Village area it takes about 25–30 minutes to ride there, which makes the 2-hour package ($349, 2.5 hours on the water) the natural choice: ride up, swim and take photos for 30–40 minutes, ride back along the Miami Beach shoreline. Every ride is self-guided; we brief you, hand you the route and the GPS keeps you inside the safe zone.
What the Haulover sandbar actually is
Between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles, where Haulover Inlet connects the Atlantic to the bay, the tidal flow has built a long sandbank that sits knee-to-waist deep at low tide. On weekends dozens of boats anchor around it, people wade between them, music plays, and food boats sell lunch. On a weekday morning it can be almost empty: clear water, pelicans, and the Bal Harbour skyline behind you. Both versions are worth the ride; they are just different days.
The ride, step by step
- Launch and briefing (before your clock starts). Controls, no-wake zones, how the GPS speed limiter works, the route on a map.
- North through the bay (10–15 min). Residential islands on one side, open bay on the other. No-wake zones near bridges; the jet ski slows down automatically.
- Open water (10–15 min). The bay widens north of the 79th Street Causeway; this is where you open the throttle.
- Approach the sandbar. Idle in, find a spot away from anchored boats, and tie off or anchor in shallow water. Life vest stays on in the water.
- Swim, float, photos (30–40 min). Water is shallow and warm most of the year.
- Ride back (25–30 min) the same way or along the Miami Beach side for different views. Be back by the end of your slot; we close at 6:00 PM.
With a 3-hour or Full Day rental you can add the Downtown skyline and Star Island on the way back; see the skyline ride guide.
Best time to go
| Time | Water | Crowd | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday 7–11 AM | Calmest of the day | Empty to light | First-timers, couples, photos |
| Weekday afternoon | Light chop, summer storms possible | Light | Flexible schedules |
| Saturday/Sunday 11 AM–4 PM | Boat wakes, busy inlet | The full party scene | Groups, bachelor parties |
| Any day, last slot (ends 6 PM) | Golden light | Thinning out | Late arrivals, sunset tones |
Tides: low tide exposes more sand and the clearest shallows; high tide means you float next to the jet ski instead of standing. Either is fine for a swim stop.
Weather: summer afternoons can bring quick thunderstorms. If we cancel for weather or safety, unused time is refunded in full or rescheduled free.
Rules that matter at the sandbar
- No-wake near anchored boats. Idle speed once you are near the sandbar; the GPS limiter helps, but you steer.
- Stay off the Haulover Inlet channel unless conditions are calm and you were briefed for the ocean. The inlet has strong current and boat traffic.
- Life vests on while in the water around boats.
- No alcohol for drivers, before or during the rental.
- Leave nothing behind. Bring a small dry bag for phone, water and sunscreen.

Frequently asked questions
How far is the Haulover sandbar by jet ski from Miami Beach?
From our base in the Miami Beach / North Bay Village area the sandbar is about 5–10 minutes of riding from the marina, so a 2-hour rental (2.5 hours on the water) gives you a relaxed swim stop.
Can you jet ski to the Haulover sandbar without a tour?
Yes. Jet Ski Miami 7 rentals are self-guided: you get a safety briefing, a recommended route and GPS speed zones, and ride to the sandbar on your own.
When is the best time to visit the Haulover sandbar?
Weekday mornings are calm and quiet; Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the busiest party scene. Low tide exposes the most sand. We ride 7 AM – 6 PM.
Is the Haulover sandbar safe for beginners?
Yes, the approach is inside the bay and the water is shallow at the sandbar. Follow the no-wake markers, idle in and anchor, and keep your life vest on in the water.
Can I bring food and drinks to the sandbar?
You can bring water and snacks in a small dry bag. No alcohol for drivers before or during the rental; it is both Florida law and our rule.
Do I need a license to ride to the sandbar?
Drivers born on or after January 1, 1988 need a Florida boater safety card (temporary certificate online, about 30 minutes). We send the link after booking.
