Things to Do in Miami on a Layover or a Few Free Hours
Some of the best hours people spend in Miami were never on the itinerary: a long connection at Miami International Airport, a 34-hour reset for a truck driver who delivered to the port, a business trip that finished early. This page is for anyone with 3–5 free hours and no plan, and it is honest about what fits in that window and what does not.
Quick answer: what can you do in Miami with 3–5 free hours?
Direct answer: one thing, done properly. The realistic options from the airport or the port are a self-guided 1-hour jet ski ride on Biscayne Bay (25–35 minutes from MIA, 20–25 minutes from PortMiami and Downtown), South Beach and the Art Deco district, Wynwood's murals, or lunch in Little Havana. Each takes about 3 hours door to door including travel. Trying to combine two of them is where layover plans fall apart.
Time budget by starting point
| Starting point | To Jet Ski Miami 7 | To South Beach | To Wynwood or Little Havana |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami International Airport (MIA) | 25–35 min | 25–35 min | 20–30 min |
| PortMiami / Downtown / Brickell | 20–25 min | 15–20 min | 10–15 min |
| Aventura / Sunny Isles | 20 min | 25–30 min | 30–40 min |
| Bal Harbour / Surfside | 10 min | 15–20 min | 25–35 min |
Jet ski travel times are our approximate figures; the others are typical rideshare estimates in normal traffic. Add 15 minutes on weekday rush hours and weekend afternoons.
Option 1: a 1-hour jet ski ride
Direct answer: the 1-hour ride is built for exactly this window. $189 per jet ski (up to 2 people, +$30 for a passenger), fuel, life vest, GPS and the safety briefing included. You arrive 30 minutes before your slot for the ID check and briefing, ride the Venetian Islands (10–15 minutes from the start) and Star Island (15–20 minutes) with the Downtown skyline behind them, and are back on the dock an hour later. Open daily 7 AM – 6 PM, year-round, from the Miami Beach / North Bay Village area. Book at /book with a $30 deposit.
Worked example: a 5-hour airport layover
- 0:00 Land, clear the terminal, rideshare out. Plan 45 minutes from gate to car on a domestic connection; more if you have to re-clear security or immigration.
- 0:45 Leave the airport. 25–35 minutes to the Bill Bird Marina, Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33154.
- 1:20 Check in: ID, briefing, life vest. This is the 30-minute early arrival.
- 1:50 to 2:50 On the water.
- 3:05 Rinse off, change, settle the balance.
- 3:10 Rideshare back to MIA, 25–35 minutes.
- 3:45 At the terminal, 75 minutes before the connection. That is tight for international and fine for domestic; with a 6-hour layover it is comfortable.
For a 4-hour layover, the same plan works only if you can leave the terminal fast and your return flight is domestic. Below 4 hours, stay at the airport.
The 2-hour option, if you have the time
A 2-hour booking ($349, with a bonus 30 minutes, so 2.5 hours on the water) adds the Haulover sandbar, a 25–30 minute ride north, with a swim stop. It needs roughly 4.5 hours door to door from the airport; realistic on a reset day or a long layover, not on a 4-hour one. See the Haulover sandbar page and the price page.
Option 2: truck drivers on a 34-hour reset
Direct answer: a reset in Miami is the best case for this page, because you have time and the ride can go in the morning when the water is calmest. Two things matter more for drivers than for anyone else:
- Parking. Parking instructions are sent after booking; ask about truck parking before you come. Tell us whether you are bobtail or pulling a trailer when you book, and we will tell you what is realistic. Do not assume a car lot takes a tractor.
- Timing against the clock. Book a 9 or 10 AM slot the morning after you start the reset, so the ride, the drive to and from, and a meal are done well inside the 34 hours with a full night of sleep on each side.
The rest of the reset: Miami Beach is 15 minutes from the location for a swim and a meal; Little Havana is the food neighborhood if you want something that is not a chain. Both are covered in things to do in Miami.
Option 3: business travelers with a free afternoon
If a meeting Downtown or in Brickell ends at 2 PM and the flight is at 8 PM, the jet ski location is 20–25 minutes away, a 3 PM 1-hour slot gets you back on land by 4:15, and the airport is 25–35 minutes from there. Rides are daylight only and we close at 6 PM, so the last slots are late afternoon. The waiver and agreement are signed electronically from a private link after booking, so you can do the paperwork from the office; the only thing you need on site is a government photo ID and swimwear under your clothes.
The non-jet-ski options, honestly compared
- South Beach and the Art Deco district. Free beach, free to walk, 15 minutes from us and 25–35 from MIA. Best in the morning before the crowds. The one thing you can do with no booking at all.
- Wynwood. Murals, galleries and coffee, 20–30 minutes from MIA. Two hours is enough. Good in the afternoon.
- Little Havana. Lunch on Calle Ocho, 20–30 minutes from MIA. Best if your free hours fall over a meal.
- Downtown museums (PAMM, Frost Science). The rainy-day or heat-wave option, 20–25 minutes from MIA, side by side on the waterfront.
Jet ski versus these: the ride is the only one that gets you on the water, it is the only one with a fixed start time (which is a feature on a layover, because it forces a schedule), and it is the one that needs 30 minutes of paperwork done in advance.
Paperwork to do before you land
- Book at /book. The person booking must be 21+ with a government photo ID.
- If you (or whoever drives) were born on or after January 1, 1988, complete the Florida boater safety card from the link sent after booking: about 30 minutes online, about $14, shown on your phone. Details on the license page. You can do it at the gate before you board.
- Sign the agreement and waiver from the private link.
- Save the marina address (Bill Bird Marina, Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Ave) and parking instructions, sent right after booking.
What to bring with carry-on only
Swimwear under your clothes, a small towel (or buy one), sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, a card for the balance and the $150 refundable security hold (released about 5 business days after return), and a waterproof phone pouch. You will get wet; a dry shirt for the ride back to the airport is the item people forget.
If something goes wrong
The booking deposit is non-refundable; cancel at least 48 hours ahead and the ride moves once to another date within 90 days, which does not help on a layover but does for a planned reset. If we cancel for weather or safety, you get a full refund of unused time including the deposit, or a free reschedule. If your inbound flight is delayed, message us on WhatsApp at +1 (786) 863-1721 (English and Russian) as soon as you know; a same-day shift is sometimes possible, never guaranteed.
Jet Ski Miami 7 has a 5.0 rating on Google from 46 reviews (October 2026). For the full-day version of this plan, see what to do in Miami for a day; seasonal notes are on the blog.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 4-hour layover in Miami enough to leave the airport?
Yes, for one thing. The jet ski location is 25–35 minutes from Miami International Airport; a 1-hour ride with the 30-minute check-in, plus travel both ways, takes about 3 hours door to door, leaving a buffer for security.
How far is the jet ski rental from Miami airport?
About 25–35 minutes by car or rideshare in normal traffic. Pickup and drop-off are at Bill Bird Marina in Haulover Park (10800 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33154); parking instructions are sent right after booking.
Can truck drivers park at the jet ski location?
Parking instructions are sent after booking; ask about truck parking before you come, because a tractor or a tractor-trailer may not fit where cars park. Tell us what you are driving when you book.
What is the shortest jet ski ride available?
One hour, $189 per jet ski for one rider, +$30 for a passenger. With the 30-minute check-in before it, plan on 90 minutes at the location.
Do I need any paperwork for a one-time ride?
A government photo ID for the person who books (21+), and a Florida boater safety card for any driver born on or after January 1, 1988. The temporary certificate is done online in about 30 minutes for about $14 and shown on your phone.
What else can I do in Miami in 3–5 hours?
South Beach and the Art Deco district (free beach, 15 minutes from the jet ski location), Wynwood murals, or Little Havana for lunch. Pick one and pair it with the ride; do not try to add a second neighborhood.
What if I get stuck in traffic on the way back to the airport?
Build in the buffer up front: ride in the morning, leave the location at least 2.5 hours before a domestic departure and more for international, and check live traffic before you leave.
